Dining Behind Bars: Quirky Prison-Themed Restaurants with a Twist in Korea

Samhyungje (Three Brothers) in Gwangju

Located in Hanam-dong, Gwangju, this barbecue restaurant brings prison life to your dining table—literally. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by steel bars, handcuffs, and interrogation-style metal tables. Opened in the spring of 2024, Samhyungje immerses diners in a prison-themed setting that feels strikingly authentic.

Adding to the experience, the walls display phrases like “Correction with Hope and Tomorrow,” emphasizing a sense of renewal. Diners can even slip into striped prisoner uniforms while grilling their meat, creating a strangely liberating yet immersive vibe.

Gyeongsaeng (Rehabilitation) in Seoul

Tucked near Hanyang University in Haengdang-dong, Gyeongsaeng takes the concept a step further. The restaurant-barblends correctional themes with introspective messages. The stairway leading up features motivational slogans like “Cultivate Morality for a Healthy Life,” while inside, phrases such as “A Reflective Life Leads to Self-Realization” adorn the walls.

Diners can enjoy creative menu items, such as truffle cheese pancakes, in a space designed to spark meaningful conversations. The place has fake prison cells and barred doors. The owner says, “We wanted this to be a place where guests leave feeling refreshed—not just physically, but mentally.”

Entertainment in Former Correctional Spaces

Iksan Prison Set in North Jeolla Province

This iconic prison has been featured in over 300 movies and TV shows. It is a must-see for thrill-seekers with an eerie atmosphere. It was the setting for the Horror Hologram Festival recently, where zombies and holographic ghosts walked the grounds. Over 35,000 people went, showing how much thrill-seekers love it.Beyond seasonal events, the prison set offers year-round activities, including:

  • Escape Room Games: Test your wits in “The Prison Lives On.”
  • Camping Adventures: Spend a night in “Amazing Prison Life,” a program blending the spooky with the outdoors.

This destination bridges the gap between history and entertainment, making it ideal for families and adventurers alike.

Papillon Zip in Jangheung County

Get ready for a cultural revolution! The former Jangheung Correctional Institution in South Jeolla Province is about to become a hotspot for art, creativity, and self-discovery. After serving its purpose for over five decades, this place is getting a makeover and is set to open its doors as a cultural venue next month.Highlights of its reinvention include:

  • Film Library: Yeonmugwan, or the Drill Hall, now hosts a library and bookstore specializing in cinema.
  • Writing Retreat: The Women’s Block has become “The Writing Cell,” a peaceful space for creative minds.
  • Art Exhibitions and Immersive Theater: Events like the “Prizenale” and “Prisonolé” invite visitors to experience the blend of correctional history and contemporary art.

The local government aims to make Papillon Zip a space where visitors can engage in introspection and creativity, symbolizing the idea of rehabilitation through art.
