Danyang County in North Chungcheong Province has been designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark. It is a huge win for the region as it aims to become a top spot for geological and ecological tourism.
The announcement was made on April 10 by UNESCO. The entire Danyang region has now become a UNESCO Global Geopark – whole 781 square kilometers, which is almost 270 times Yeouido in Seoul.
What are Global Geoparks?
Global Geoparks are the regions that are famous for their remarkable geological heritage. Danyang has 43 geosites in the region and includes limestone caves, rare karst formations, and stunning sedimentary landscapes. The region’s designation by UNESCO highlights the international recognition of its 1.3 billion years of geological history.
With this designation, South Korea now boasts seven UNESCO Global Geoparks. It includes Jeju Island, Cheongsong, the Mudeungsan region, the Hantangang River, the West Coast of Jeollabuk-do, and the East Coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Notably, Danyang is the inaugural UNESCO Global Geopark within the central Chungcheong region.

Notable geological features include the iconic Dodamsambong Peaks, a series of limestone spires rising from the Namhan River. Gosu Cave, is famous for its striking stalactites, stalagmites, and prehistoric formations. Other significant geological landmarks include Ondal Cave, Sainam Rock Cliffs, Yeocheonri Karst Terrain, and coral fossils discovered in Gosuri.
Danyang County started the campaign for global geopark recognition by UNESCO in 2016. The region became a national geopark in 2020. Following comprehensive research, infrastructure development, and international assessments, the site was designated as a candidate in 2023 and officially approved this year.
To capitalize on its newly acquired status, the county has devised a comprehensive plan to expand its educational tourism offerings. This includes hosting significant scientific conferences and developing themed experiences, such as a highly anticipated “Geo and Space” learning tour. Notably, the county has prioritized major initiatives, including hosting Korea’s largest geopark festival in October and enhancing the capabilities of key facilities, including the Geopark Visitor Center and the Gosuri Community Center.
“This designation affirms Danyang’s immense geological value on a global scale. We aim to make the geopark a driving force for regional growth—benefiting both residents and visitors alike.”
County Governor Kim Moon-geun
Impact on local tourism
The designation as UNESCO Global Geopark is likely to boost tourism in Danyang County. It will also vitalize the local economy, as observed from other six geopark sites in South Korea.
