What are turtle chips?

Turtle chips or Kobuk chips as they are known in Korea are a delightful snack. The name Kobuk Chips translates to “turtle chips” due to their cute resemblance to a turtle shell.

It is a delicious and popular Korean snack that perfectly complements any binge session. The chips come in a variety of flavors – cinnamon, corn soup, shrimp, vanilla, and churros. With so many options, you will surely find something that matches your palate and even mood!

Launched in April 2017, these chips quickly gained popularity with their initial flavors: sweet cinnamon and savory corn soup. Kobuk Chips continued to innovate, adding a shrimp flavor in February 2018. But it was the September 2020 release of the Chocolate Churros flavor that truly catapulted them to top-hit status for the year.

So, if you’re looking for a unique and delicious Korean snack, be sure to grab a bag of Kobuk Chips! Their variety of flavors offers something for everyone, and the adorable turtle shell shape adds a fun touch.

Layering up the flavors

These chips, cleverly named Kobuk Chips in Korea (meaning “turtle chips”), boast a four-layered construction. It’s not just an advertisement gimmick. It gives an irresistibly crispy crunch in every bite. The layers even cleverly resemble a tortoise shell, adding to the turtle theme.

What boosted their popularity was PSY. The ‘Gangnam Style’ fame artist was a former advertising model for Turtle Chips.

Different flavors of turtle chips

  • Cinnamon (discontinued)
  • Chocolate Churros
  • Corn Soup
  • Shrimp (discontinued)
  • Sweet soybean (Injeolmi)
  • Sweet Vanilla

Cinnamon turtle chips

If you want something subtle and sweet, cinnamon turtle chips are the perfect options. This was discontinued in January 2021 and hasn’t been back in stock since then.

Chocolate Churros turtle chips

Chocolate churros have a mix of chocolate and cinnamon flavoring. This is one flavor that is probably the most popular, especially since its release. While the turtle chips were popular earlier, after the release of this flavor, they became a blockbuster hit. You will find it sold out in most Korean convenience stores.

Corn Soup turtle chips

Tasting like creamy corn soup, these kobuk chips are just divine. The flavor is not too bold and it is much sweeter than you’d have thought.

Shrimp turtle chips

These kobuk chips contain authentic shrimp extract and are quite spicy and savory in taste. Although, this flavor is now discontinued.

Sweet soybean (Injeolmi) turtle chips

It is one of the most common flavor among Korean snacks. You can even consider it the flavor of Korea!

Sweet Vanilla turtle chips

Made with real vanilla extract, these turtle chips have a mellow taste, and are slightly sweet.

Custom flavors

Catering to international consumers, Orion has two different flavors – Flamin’ lime and Mexico Barbecue. The Flamin’ lime chips are available in the United States. They have a sour and spicy taste. The Mexico Barbecue chips are in China and it tastes like cumin. Spicy Devil is another flavor, which might be spicy for some but not for locals.
